6 Day Safari – Mwanza
A 6-day safari experiencing the national parks and reserves of northern Tanzania.
No visit to East Africa is truly complete until you have experienced three of Tanzania’s best game parks, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater. See phenomenal wildlife in its natural habitat, while enjoying your evenings in comfortable safari lodges. This is Tanzania at its best!
With the Big Five, the Small Five and the extensive amounts of wildlife, this region offers arguably the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. Our small groups and 4×4 safari vehicles not only allow for a more authentic travel experience, but ensure great views so that you’ll be able to capture the perfect shot of the some of the most amazing animals on the planet with Trekili Eco Expeditions. That said, with its vast size and varied terrain, game viewing is only one aspect of the Serengeti – the scenery is simply breathtaking.
En route visit Olduvai Gorge for a unique cultural experience before continuing through Tanzania’s highlands to Lake Manyara National Park, where your camp set on the rim of the Great Rift Valley offers spectacular views of the plains below with its ecologically diverse game. Travel to the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater where you’ll explore the many habitats of the thousands of animals that make it their home. Finally, visit the Eleyo Masai village and see how the Masai live before continuing our journey across the vast Serengeti dotted with wildlife and Acacia trees.

Day 1: Explore the Serengeti National Park
From Mwanza we travel for 1.5hrs, and enter the Serengeti National Park from the less visited Ndabaka western gate, and enjoy the multitude of animal and bird life while cruising through the acacia-spotted savannah. En route to the central Seronera plains, you will begin to experience the sheer vastness of this territory, and you will marvel at the multitude of animal and bird life while journeying through this acacia-spotted savannah. Game sightings and photo opportunities abound. We arrive at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in time to enjoy a respite from the dirt roads and heat of the day and enjoy a hearty lunch. Later on in the afternoon, as the animal kingdom comes alive, continue your search for the “Big 5″ – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino – while taking in the vastness of the Serengeti plains returning to our lodge as the sun sets on this magnificent animal kingdom.
Day 3: Serengeti – Lake Manyara
After an early rise spend the morning exploring the vast Serengeti and we move from location to location in search of sometimes elusive game and visit a waterhole known for its Hippos and alligators. We continue our journey along the southern Serengeti short grass plains, commonly known as the endless plains, where the name Serengeti was derived, a Masai word meaning “The Endless Plains”.
Stopping en route we visit the archeological site of Olduvai Gorge where we will receive a brief history of the gorge with a professional guide from the Olduvai center and then take a walk (around 1 hr) along the floor of the gorge with a local ranger. We then stop at the remarkable phenomenon called the Shifting Sands, a geological rarity which is sacred to the Masai. Known as a Barchan Dune, this interesting phenomenon is constantly on the move across the dry savannah plains. As we continue our journey, game and photo opportunities abound as we make our way to the Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge with its ‘Boma’ style rondavels superbly positioned on the edge of the Mto Wa Mbu escarpment, offering breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara. Sit back, relax and take in the views.
Day 4: Visit Lake Manyara
The name Manyara is derived from the Masai word “Emanyara”, which is a Euphorbia species of plant that is found around a family homestead in the area. After an early breakfast we drive down into the valley and explore the Lake Manyara National Park. Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”.
Here guests will be introduced to large buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes and zebra herds congregating on the grassy plains while the narrow belt of acacia wood bordering the plains are the favoured haunt of Manyara’s legendary tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants. Taking in the expansive views eastward, across the central soda lake we will be amazed by the sight of thousands of pink-hued flamingos on their perpetual migration, as well as other large water birds such as storks, cormorants and pelicans. At the Southern end of the park we will visit algae-streaked sulphur hot water springs known as (MajiMoto) bubbling from deep within the earth.
After lunch we continue our journey through the highlands and Karatu and onto Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge where we relax and take in the stunning vistas from our rooms.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater
Cited as ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ’8th Natural Wonder of the World, Ngorongoro Crater is a deep, volcanic crater and the largest un-flooded and unbroken caldera in the world. Around 20kms across, 600 meters deep and 300 sq kms in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder referred to as the world’s biggest wildlife zoo, due to its high density of resident game.
Early in the morning we descend to the crater floor where you will be amazed by the sheer number and diversity of animals and birdlife. Standing in our pop up safari vehicles the viewing opportunities are endless, just deciding which way to look and what to look at, the choices are unlimited. The sheer excitement as we spot any of the big 5 or we get the call over the radio that a lion is perched high atop a nearby rocky outcrop or a black rhino has been sighted and rush with our vehicle to catch a glimpse before the moment passes. The excitement mounts again as arrive to yet another sighting, perhaps a lioness and her cubs right next to our vehicle. The sheer excitement of the chase is indescribable.
Tonight as we relax we reflect on what has been a truly remarkable journey like no other experience and marvel in the wonders of the amazing wildlife Tanzania has to offer. These memories are like no other and will stay with you forever. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge.
Day 6: Return to Mwanza
On Day 6 we Return to Mwanza. After breakfast we visit Eleyo Masai village before retracing our path through the vast Serengeti dotted with amazing Acacia trees and wildlife, taking time out to capture those last photos of this amazing animal kingdom we have been privileged to experience.
